At 7:30 on the morning of the last Sunday of February, the traditional “wake-up call” or Despertà commences from the central Calle la Paz, an event that leads into the Fallas breakfast. Then, music bands will fill the city’s beautiful historic quarter and march through the Plaza de la Reina square and along Calle San Vicente street in a procession that ends up in Valencia’s Plaza del Ayuntamiento square. At around 14:00 on Sunday, the deafening noise of the Mascletà fire cracker display will announce the start of the Fallas 2011.
La Crida marks the official opening of the Fallas Festival. Crowds of spectators and the Fallas Committees gather beneath the Serranos Towers, one of the best known historical monuments of Valencia. La Crida usually takes place on the last Sunday of February.
After a spectacular inaugural display of light, sound, music and fireworks, the “Fallera Mayor” of Valencia, the elected festival queen, invites everyone to enjoy the fiesta!
